A recognized NGO of the United Nations and an associate member of the Mahabodhi Maitri Mandala, the Buddhist Brotherhood Assembly is a pioneering non-sectarian organization that was first established in 1982 in the Chattagong Hills Tracts of Bangladesh with the following objectives:

  • the propagation of Buddhism by arranging seminars, meetings, Dharma talks, and workshops
  • to conduct religious and general education programs
  • to bring the greater community together under it's programs
  • to arrange distribution of religious books among poorest devotees of the society,
  • to construct and renovation of Temples, Libraries, a Bhikkhu Training Centre,
  • to provide healthcare, including clinics, arranging medical services, HIV/AIDS advocacy, and services for elderly.

The Buddhist Brotherhood Assembly also renders it's services and aid to those who have been marginalized within society, including assistance and shelter for the homeless, the distressed, and children who have been orphaned, as well as providing funds to help poor families construct their dwellings and homes, a non-formal education for adults in an attempt to eradicate illiteracy, filtering and supplying pure drinking water within the region, and alerting people to the dangers of ecological and environmental pollution.

The religious preceptor and spiritual director of the Buddhist Brotherhood Assembly, the Ven. Sharanananda Bhikkhu, is also the founder of an orphanage in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Khagrachari Sadar, where 106 orphans are given shelter, basic education, and food.

Besides his involvement in social and spiritual development activities, the Ven. Sharanananda Bhikkhu is also the exectutive director of the Parbattya Adivashi Unnayan Sanghsta (Indigenous Development Society) and a recipient of the United Nations UNESCO Award for "World Mankind For Peace, Human Rights, and International Understanding".

While many people are aware of the great suffering which occurs in Bangladesh, few are aware that the Buddhists of modern day Bangladesh are not only an impoverished people of a poor country, but also a minority. In order to carry forward the works of charity and compassion for the people of Bangladesh, the Buddhist Brotherhood Assembly needs financial assistance and the support of benevolent people and organizations, as well as sponsorship from the business sector and relief institutions from around the world.
